Gold Slides 3.8% in a Week, Back Near $4,000, as the 10-Year Yield Hits 5%
October 25, 2026 · Lumo.gold

Gold had its roughest week in a while. Spot prices closed Friday at about $4,012 an ounce, down 0.3% on the day after a 2.5% drop Thursday, and about 3.8% below the previous Friday’s close of $4,168.
What pushed gold lower
- Yields hit 5%. The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 5.00%. Gold pays no interest, so when safe bonds pay more, gold loses some appeal.
- A firmer dollar. The dollar index edged up to about 101.75, which makes gold more expensive for overseas buyers.
- Strong factory data. A better-than-expected manufacturing reading added to the case for rates staying high.
- Oil. Brent crude rose about 3%, keeping inflation, and therefore rates, in focus.
The rest of the complex followed. Platinum fell about 1.3% to around $1,554, palladium slipped about 0.9%, and gold miners dropped, with Newmont down more than 4.5% on the day.
What your gold is worth at about $4,012
Melt value is the price of the pure gold in an item. Here is the approximate melt value per gram:
- 24k (99.9%): about $129 per gram
- 22k (91.7%): about $118 per gram
- 18k (75%): about $97 per gram
- 14k (58.3%): about $75 per gram
- 10k (41.7%): about $54 per gram
Dealers pay a percentage of melt value, so offers will be lower than these figures. A fair offer on scrap jewelry is usually a clear, stated percentage of melt, not a lump sum with no explanation.
The week ahead
The Federal Reserve announces its rate decision Wednesday, with markets expecting it to hold the 3.75%–4.00% range, and core PCE inflation data lands Thursday. A drop in the 10-year yield back below about 4.9% would likely help gold. Yields holding at 5% or higher would keep pressure on.
