Melt value = weight × purity × live spot. It’s an estimate of the metal content, not an offer. Dealers typically pay less than melt for scrap, and coins or designer pieces can be worth more.
What is the spot price?
The spot price is the current market price for one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of pure metal, as traded on global markets. It moves throughout the day.
Why is a dealer’s offer lower than spot?
Dealers pay for testing, refining, overhead and risk, so offers for scrap gold are usually below melt value. That’s why comparing several offers matters.
How often do these prices update?
About every 10 minutes from a market data feed. They are delayed, for information only, and are not offers to buy or sell.
What’s a pennyweight (dwt)?
A pennyweight is 1.555 grams — 1/20 of a troy ounce. Many jewelers and gold buyers quote prices per pennyweight.
